The dust has finally setting from North Carolina’s march to the 2009 NCAA men’s basketball championship. The Tar Heels have reloaded in their 2009 recuiting class after seeing Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, and Tyler Hansbrough depart for the 2009 NBA draft. John Henson comes in as one of the most highly touted big men of the 2009 prospects with Travis and David Wear giving UNC a trio of talented big men for next season’s defense of their 2009 title. Shooting guards Leslie McDonald and Dexter Strickland round out UNC’s recruiting class that is ranked in the top five of all major NCAA basketball programs for next year.

2009-10 Projected Starting Lineup for the North Carolina Tar Heels

Similar to Kentucky, North Carolina will likely have their starting lineup evolve as the season progresses in 2009-10. John Henson will play the small forward position vice his originally recruited position of shooting guard due to his growth spurt…and he just might find himself platooning with Deon Thompson until he gets the Tar Heel system down. One of the Wear twins will likely get the nod at power forward but Ed Davis could end up keeping his position depending on pre-season workouts. Tyler Zeller should be shifted over to play the center position next season for North Carolina while Dexter Strickland will probably start the season in a backup role to Larry Drew II at the point, but could find himself as the starter by the time UNC hits conference play.

Projected North Carolina StartingLine-Up:

PG: Larry Drew, II

SG: Marcus Ginyard

SF: Deon Thompson

PF: David Wear

C: Tyler Zeller

no that will absolutely not be the starting lineup

    PG- Larry Drew
    SG- Dexter Strickland
    SF- Marcus Ginyard
    PF- Ed Davis
    PF- Deon Thompson
dont forget about Will Graves he could very well be at shooting guard next year

      James,
Thanks a lot! I’m going to update the projection for the starting lineup here in the next few weeks for the Tar Heels and will take your input into consideration!

The original posting and Nigel's comments are way off. James at least appears to have watched UNC basketball in the past. There are still a few open questions at this point, such as:
    1) Drew or Strickland starting at PG? Or will it transition mid-way through the year?
    2) Graves or Henson starting at SF? Or will they start Strickland at the 2 and play Ginyard at 3?

There's no way you put Deon Thompson at SF if you watch UNC basketball.

Here's my read for who plays where and who starts early in the season, along with each player's 'natural' fit.
    Early StarterPrimary Alternate
    PGLarry Drew (PG)Dexter Strickland (PG/SG)
    SGMarcus Ginyard (SG/SF)Leslie McDonald (SG)
    SFWilliam Graves (SF)John Henson (SF/PF)
    PFDeon Thompson (PF/C)David Wear (SF/PF)
    CEd Davis (PF/C)Tyler Zeller (PF/C)

      Bruce,
Thanks for the great feedback! I’ll be doing a post on projecting the starting lineup later this week as time permits which will update the pre-draft decision info, etc.
      Cheers,
      James

What a dreadful dilemma…having to choose between this McDonald's All American, or that one! Oh, lord, what gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands. Please, any of those guys will probably do extremely well. Only the mix of competition will tell who fits with whom. I find it amusing that most prognosticators don't even mention Zeller, probably because he disappeared after his injury. It'll be fun to see how that crew works and jells throughout the fall and winter. They'll have a shot at the final four, but anything beyond that without a great talent at PG, and they're doomed.
