Once again, Coach Jim Calhoun guided the Uconn Huskies to a highly successful season and was one game away from challenging for the NCAA title. This is a program that year after attracts the top talent from across the country and Coach Calhoun’s 2009 men’s basketball recruiting class is no different. Despite losing 4 of its top seven scorers, Coach Calhoun’s new influx of talent should help fill this cavernous void almost immediately.
2009 Connecticut Huskies Recruits
#1 2009 Connecticut Recruit – C – Alex Oriakhi
Ht: 6’8”
Wt: 230lbs
ESPN Ranking: #20
Powerful and athletic are two of the main words that are uttered when Oriakhi’s name is mentioned. This is a young man that has the ability to dominate inside the paint both offensively and defensively. His offensive skills are above average with a nice jump hook that he uses either hand to launch. He also has the ability to move away from the basket and has a nice jumper with range to 17 feet. He is an excellent shot blocker and a ferocious rebounder. He will be expected to step in and contribute for Coach Calhoun’s Huskies almost immediately.
#2 Connecticut Recruit – SF – Jamal Coombs-McDaniel
Ht: 6’6”
Wt: 195lbs
ESPN Ranking: #33
Coombs-McDaniel is a player who has enough versatility, strength and awareness to play any of the 3 perimeter positions. He can use his size and outstanding quickness to get into the paint and score or use his outside game to draw defenses out. His range extends to the 3 point arc but he needs to show a greater amount of accuracy from this range. He possesses above average passing skills and has tremendous court vision to find the open man. Defensively he can guard multiple positions if needed. Coombs – McDaniel has shown excellent on court leadership skills both vocally and by example.
#3 Connecticut Recruit – PG – Darius Smith
Ht: 6’2”
Wt: 170lbs
ESPN Ranking: n/a
A long armed defender, Smith has established a reputation as a ball hawking defender. He has excellent quickness and fast hands to harass an opponent into mistakes. Although point guard is his position of choice, Smith has shown a smooth shooting stroke and has the ability to move to shooting guard if needed.
#4 Connecticut Recruit – SG – Jamaal Trice
Ht: 6’5”
Wt: 190lbs
ESPN Ranking: n/a
Explosive and athletic, Trice is a wing player that shows excellent range with his jumper. With his size and jumping ability, he will pose major problems for the smaller guards of the Big East. He is an above average rebounder that is not afraid of the contact inside the paint. With his size and athleticism, Trice will be a good fit into Coach Calhoun’s guard rotation.
