Besides his overall basketball skills, it was his work ethic and desire that made him such a prized acquisition in the 2009 Duke Blue Devils Men’s Basketball recruiting class. How he will fit into Coach K’s overall scheme has yet to be determined but it does make for a pleasant dilemma. With his ball handling skills and his ability to run the floor in transition, look for Plumlee to become a match-up nightmare for opposing coaches.
2009 Duke Basketball Recruiting – Mason Plumlees Background
As a sophomore, Plumlee was just a 6ft. 10in tall gangly kid who’s basketball skills were rudimentary at best. But what Plumlee realized is that nothing is improved if you don’t work on it and that’s exactly what Plumlee did. His coach at Christ School, David Gaines was always impressed at how hard Plumlee would work on improving his weaknesses. At times it was if Plumlee was relentless. Needless to say, that attitude catapulted him into becoming one of the premier big men in the country and had major colleges such as Duke, Louisville and Miami sitting up and taking notice. Although his statistics in his senior season don’t seem all that impressive, 15.3 points per game and just over 10 rebounds, it was the intangibles such as his leadership and on court presence that made this young man stand out and be recognized. Plumlee finished his high school career by leading the Christ School Greenies to their 3rd consecutive NCISSA state title over Ravenscroft and fellow Duke recruit Ryan Kelly. So what do you do for an encore after experiencing a record of 99-8? Simple, you head to Duke and help Coack K win ACC titles!
2009 Duke Basketball Recruiting - Mason Plumlees Skill Set
Mason Plumlee is not only tall, but to many, he also displays a wealth of athleticism to go along with his height. Now if you add in mobile and agile you have a player who’s upside is nothing short of being off the charts. His offensive skills are going to give his ACC opponents nightmares. He can play down low, and will be even more effective as he gains strength in his upper body. But he also has the ability to consistently hit the 18 ft jumper. What is even better for Coach K, Plumlee has the ability to drift into 3 point country and knock down the 3 if the defense refuses to pick him up. With his long arms, Plumlee will certainly block his share of shots and his efforts on the glass both offensively and defensively will bring smiles to the Blue Devil faithful. For a big man, Plumlee has above average ball handling skills and can deliver the accurate pass to an open teammate and make it look easy. Look for Plumlee to start contributing in a big way for the Duke Blue Devils in the upcoming 2009 -2010 men’s basketball campaign.
