2009 Duke Basketball Recruiting, Ryan Kelly

Maybe he got wind of the 2009 recruits that Coach Roy Williams was also courting, the Wear twins and John Henson to be precise, and figured that his opportunities might be just a bit limited in that environment. So needless to say, he chose to be part of the 2009 Duke Blue Devils Men’s Basketball recruiting class to the surprise of Duke’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Maybe with Kelly in the fold for the upcoming season, Duke might once again have the opportunity knock on the door to the Final Four in March Madness. All in all, it should make for quite and interesting season.
2009 Duke Basketball Recruiting – Ryan Kelly’s Background
At a legitimate 6ft. 10in. tall, Ryan Kelly left Ravenscroft High School firmly cemented as the schools all time leading scorer. He finished his high school career by averaging 25.2 points per game and over 10 rebounds a contest in his farewell season. And let’s not forget that he accomplished this while maintaining a 4.1 grade point average! The year was capped when he was named as a McDonald’s All American. But then again, it would have been a travesty to leave him off the team. Needless to say, this a very special talent that will only get better as he matures and should be a treat to watch when the Duke Blue Devils begin their upcoming 2009-2010 basketball season.
2009 Dukes Basketball Recruiting - Ryan Kelly’s Skill Set
When he starts his collegiate career with Duke, most feel he will not be required to play the role of a true power forward. With his outside scoring ability, especially with his ability to knock down the 3 point shot, this is a young man who should be able to make his living from the perimeter. You have to remember, Kelly shot darn near 63% in high school and most observers feel that he should be able to have the same type of accuracy in college. Besides his ability to score, Kelly, despite his size, has guard instincts when it comes to ball handling and finding the open man on the floor. Many feel Coach K will use Kelly’s abilities to spread the floor and open up defenses to create as many mismatches as possible. It’s not certain that he will be a starter his first year, but as many feel, don’t rule out that possibility.
