Stephen Curry, a 6ft 3in 185lb junior from  Charlotte, North Carolina made the decision to bypass his senior year at Davidson and take his chances in upcoming 2009 NBA Draft. Although the decision was not an easy one, most people felt that Curry had nothing left to prove at the collegiate level and that included his father, former NBA sharpshooter Del Curry. With his sweet shooting stroke, and his ability to score from just about any spot on the floor, most scouts feel that Curry has the potential to be a first round NBA Draft pick and tap into his lifelong dream, and that is to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Stephen Curry’s Collegiate Career

Let’s face it, after leading the country in scoring in 2008-2009 with 28.6ppg, what else would Curry have to prove by returning for his senior season? Actually, nothing. It’s no secret that during recruiting time, the major schools wanted little to do with the undersized, he was only 5ft 9in tall as a high school senior, skinny kid from North Carolina, but Coach Bob McKillop of the Davidson Wildcats saw something in Curry and signed him. Little did McKillop know that within 2 seasons, Davidson would be put into the national spotlight due to the scoring ability of Stephen Curry. From his debut season when he averaged 21.5ppg, to finishing his career as the nations leading scorer, the one phrase that was always uttered when you mentioned Curry’s name was that of “Scoring Machine”. And this was done when opponents of Davidson had one game plan in mind, and that was to use everything they had to stop Curry. What many also neglect to look at was his ability to score and run the Davidson offense during his junior year when he switched to play the point guard position. With such a stellar 2008 -2009 campaign, along with being named a first team Associated Press All-American, it was definitely time for Curry to say goodbye to the college ranks and seek his fame and fortune on the next level.

Stephen Curry’s 2009 NBA Draft Prospects

The first things that many scouts will mention about Curry is that he will need to add some beef to his frame in order to withstand the rigorous 82 game NBA schedule. Unless Curry experiences another growth spurt, and most don’t look for that to happen since he is now 21 years old, Curry will most likely end up as a point guard for whatever NBA team picks him. In a number of 2009 NBA mock drafts, Curry has shown the possibilities of being selected as high as # 5 and as low as #12 in the first round. Sure, it’s all conjecture at this point, but what seems to be certain is that Curry will be gone before the start of the second round. Although he has some limitations, Curry’s overall makeup, and especially his ability to score from the outside, will make him a very interesting choice for many teams in the top ten draft positions. Needless to say, it should be interesting!
