Selection Sunday will be held on Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at 6 PM EST on the CBS network. The final game before Selection Sunday this year is the 2010 Big Ten Basketball Tournament championship. The Selection Sunday broadcast will be the initial announcement confirming the 65 team field for the NCAA tournament, seeds, and assigned games throughout the NCAA Tournament regions.
What is Selection Sunday?
In case you’re new to basketball, or just started following it in the last year, the term Selection Sunday refers to the one hour TV program that announces the NCAA Tournament bracket on live television. The Men’s bracket is covered by CBS with parallel coverage by ESPN with ESPN being the sole network covering the women’s NCAA Tournament bracket announcements.
Automatic Bids to the NCAA Tournament
There are 31 automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament from the various conference champions. 30 of the 31 bids go to the winner of the respective postseason conference basketball tournament with the Ivy League providing their automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament to the regular season champion. Although these 31 teams are known prior to the bracket announcements by the NCAA selection committee, the seeds, opponents, and locations for tournament play are not known until announced.
At-Large Bids to the NCAA Tournament
Probably the most debated aspect of the NCAA tournament prior to the first round being played are the teams who receive at-large bids to the tournament, and those who don’t. There are 34 at large bids awarded by the NCAA Tournament selection committee that uses a variety of means to pick the teams to include their RPI, rankings, quality wins over the course of the season, losses, and in some cases potentially the expected crowd following for a team.
Once Selection Sunday occurs, the clock starts for workplace and other tournament bracket challenges with the NCAA Tournament Play-in game occurring on the following Tuesday.
