2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament Preview: Montana Grizzlies

The Montana Grizzlies came back from a 22 point deficit and defeated Weber State to win the 2010 Big Sky basketball tournament 66-65. Montana went 20-10 this season and finished the season with a 10-6 record in Big Sky regular season play. The win was the second time that Montana had beaten Weber State this season.

Montana was led by Anthony Johnson in the Big Sky championship with a record 42 points. He was perfect from the free throw line shooting 14 – 14, and was 13 of 22 from the field. Johnson had been averaging 19.6 ppg this year. He is complemented by center Brian Qvale who scores 10 points a game and grabs 7 boards per contest.

The Grizzlies have had a decent performance against major teams in their non-conference schedule this season with a win over Oregon earlier in the season and a loss to the Washington Huskies by four points.

Montana shoots 49 percent from the field and averages more than 40 percent from the 3. Entering the Big Sky tournament, Montana had lost two of three games. The Grizzlies have gone 4-1 in their past 5 games.

Montana will likely be a 15 or a 16 seed in the 2010 NCAA tournament. If they are able to get a 15 seed, there will be a slight chance for the Grizzlies to pull an upset, but not considered likely. If Johnson can have another career outing, Montana may be able to keep it close against the likely #1 or #2 seeds in the tourney.
