The Syracuse Orangemen fell to the “Double Bye” Jinx in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, but are still expected to be a #1 seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Syracuse finished the season at 28-4 overall and 15-3 in Big East regular season play. Coach Jim Boeheim is 42-25 in 26 total NCAA tournaments over his coaching career.

Syracuse made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2009 NCAA tournament losing to Oklahoma, and was not originally forecast to be one of the leaders in Big East play. That changed quickly though, and the Orange have been considered one of the best all-around teams in the 2009-10 college basketball season. They registered wins on the road at West Virginia, Georgetown, and Villanova at home this season while losing both games against Louisville and Pitt.

Syracuse is led by Wesley Johnson who has been socring 16.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and 2.3 apg and makes 39 % of his three point shots. Onuaku is the front court leader, but sufferred a knee sprain during Big East play. If he is sidelined, the Orange lose their front-court depth advantage with having to use Kris Joseph in a starting role (11.2 ppg).

For Syracuse to go deep in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, they will have to overcome the fact that no #1 seed who has lost the first game of their conference tournament has gone on to win the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse scores 81.4 ppg which is 7th in the nation and only allows 66.1 ppg on defense. As a team, they shoot 51.5 % from the field and average just under 40 % from 3. The Orange also shoot 67% from the free throw line.

Syracuse will likely be a #1 seed in the 2010 NCAA tournament. If Onuaku does not make it back to regular play, then the Orange could find themselves upset earlier in the tournament than many would project.
