The BYU Cougars finished the season 29-5 and 13-3 in Mountain West Conference (MWC) play. BYU last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 when they lost to Texas A&M in the opening round of the tournament. Head Coach Dave Rose is 0-3 in three total NCAA appearances. The Cougars were able to defeat UNLV, SDSU, and UTEP in January and February respectfully, have also lost to Utah State and UNLV.
BYU has won this year with shooting an amazing 49 % from the field. Jimmy Fredette leads the team and hits 45.8 percent of his 3′s and scores at a 21.7 ppg average. Fredette also runs the point for the Cougars and averages 4.7 apg. Joining Fredette in the Cougars outside attack are Jackson Emery (12.6 ppg) and Jonathan Tavernari who is 6’6″ and has the ability to score in bunches.
BYU does lack a big man that can provide a shot block threat and persistent inside presence. Freshman Brandon Davies is the largest Cougar at 6’9″, 230 lbs backing up starter Noah Hartsock at 6’8″. If BYU makes it very deep into the tournament, their lack of inside game will likely prove the difference when the Cougars do finally lose in the Tourney since not one player averages more than 5.1 rebounds per game. They are starting off as a #7 seed.
BYU scores at a 83.1 ppg clip which is 2nd in the nation. Their defense gives up 64 points per goam and holds their opponents to 40% shooting. The Cougars average 8 3′s a game while hitting them at a 32.2% clip as a team.
