2010 NCAA Tournament Preview: Cornell Big Red

The Cornell Big Red finished the season as the Ivy League Champions with a 27-4 overall record and 13-1 in Ivy League Play. The Big Red had big wins this season (no pun intended) over Alabama, St. John’s, and Harvard. They almost upset #1 ranked Kansas on the road and have been ranked at various points this season. They were last in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 when they lost in the first round to Missouri. Head coach, Steve Donahue is 0-2 in 2 total NCAA Tournament appearances as head coach.

Cornell is an experienced team starting four seniors. Their leading scorer is senior guard, Ryan Wittman who scores 17.5 ppg and gets 4.0 rpg. Fellow senior guard, Louis Dale average 11.9 ppg and dishes out 4.8 apg while senior center, Jeff Foote scores 12.3 ppg and grabs 8.2 rpg. This year’s team is almost the same exact team that has made the NCAA tournament the past two seasons. Senior Ryan Wittman hits approximately 3.2 3′s a game at a rate of 42%

When Cornell has done poorly this season, it has been due to being over matched in the front court. Jeff Foote takes on the majority of the inside work, but when the Big Red plays a team with a strong front court they can quickly become over matched.

Cornell averages 75.3 ppg and gives up 63.2 a game on defense. They shoot 48% from the field and their opponents shoot 41.3 %. The Big Red averages 9.8 3′s made a game while shooting them at a 43% clip. They are also good free throw shooters making them at a 73% clip. The Big Red also has a 1.3 assist to turnover ratio as a team.
