The East Tennessee State Buccaneers won the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Buccaneers are a #16 seed and will be playing #1 seed Kentucky in the opening round of the East Region bracket. ETSU finished the season at 20-14 and 13-7 in conference play. Big wins for ETSU this season were over Appalachian State, Charleston, and Jacksonville. They last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 when they lost in the first round to Pittsburgh. Coach Murry Bartow is 0-3 in 3 total NCAA appearances as a head coach.
ETSU was able to make it to the NCAA tournament for a 2nd straight year based on their defense. The Buccaneers are led by their guards, Justin Tubbs, 12.0ppg, Micah Williams, 12.5 ppg, and Tommy Hubbard, 14.1 ppg. Hubbard gets most of his points from attacking the basket and also rebounds at 8.3 rpg. Justin Tubbs shoots almost 7 3′s a game while Micah Williams takes a mix of outside and driving shots.
The biggest weakness of ETSU is their lack of size. Hubbard has to spend a fair amount of time at the power forward position, which at only 6’4” will be a large disadvantage for ETSU when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats who are the tallest team on average in Division I basketball.
ETS scores 69.2 ppg and gives up 66.5 ppg. They shoot 43.5 % from the field and hold opponents to 41.5 %. The team takes an average of just over 5 three pointers a game and hits them at a 31% clip. ETSU shoots 66% from the free throw line. The team assist-to-turnover margen is .75 which does not bode well for the back court taking on John Wall and Eric Bledsoe in the first round of the NCAA Tourney.
