The New Mexico Lobos finished the season at 29-4 and 14-2 in conference play in the Mountain West and earned a #3 seed in the NCAA East Regional. The Lobos had big wins this season over California, Texas A&M, and BYU. They lost at Oral Roberts and twice in conference play to UNLV and SDSU. Coach Steve Alford is 3-4 overall in 4 total NCAA Tournament appearances as a head coach. The Lobos last played in the NCAA tournament in 2005 when they lost in the first round to the Villanova Wildcats.

New Mexico leads the way in the Mountain West this year which had an unprecedented four teams make the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos are led by junior guard, Darington Hobson who averaged 16.2 ppg, 4.6 apg, and 9.2 rpg. Three other starters average double figures in points in Dairese Gary, guard, 12.7 ppg, 3.9 apg, Roman Martinez, forward, 13.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and Phillip McDonald, guard, 10.7 ppg. Martinez is the most consistent outside shooter for New Mexico and also gets a lot of points in the paint. Phillip McDonald has close to a 40% average from 3, but is not a great slasher yet.

The Lobos have good size at the 2 and 3 spots, but do not have an imposing front court. Dairese Gary runs the point for the Lobos and has a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio. The Lobos average 76.9 ppg and give up 66.8 on defense while shooting 44% from the floor and having opponents average approximately 42%. The Lobos average around 8 made 3 pointers a game and shoot them at a 37.9% clip. As a team, they have a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio and average a 6 rebound per game advantage over their opponents.
