2010 NCAA Tournament Preview: Ohio Bobcats

The Ohio Bobcats won the 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament and finished the season 21-14 and 7-9 in MAC regular season play. During the regular season, they had big wins over Illinois State, Wright State, and Kent State with losses to Bowling Green, Ball State, and Eastern Michigan. The Bobcats last NCAA appearance was in 2005 when they lost to Florida. This year is coach John Groce’s first NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Bobcats started the tournament with a #14 seed and were not expect to do much against heavily favored Georgetown. Instead, Armon Basset scored 32 points in a convincing win for Ohio over Georgetown in the Midwest regional. The Bobcats were not expect to win the MAC tournament after going 7-9 in MAC regular season play and being a #9 seed in the conference tourney. Despite being dominated in the paint by Georgetown, Ohio relied on Basset and 19 points from D.J. Cooper on 19 of 33 shooting to convincingly defeat the Hoyas in the first round of the tournament.

Coming into the first round of the tournament, Armon Bassett led the team with 16.3 ppg, and freshman D.J. Cooper was averaging 13.2 ppg, 5.9 apg, and 5.5 rebounds. Junior forward Tommy Freeman was the next highest scorer at 10.6 ppg. The biggest weakness of Ohio throughout the season was lack of a strong front court. They demonstrated this against the Hoyas as well, but relied on their guard play to lead the majority of the ballgame and win.

For the season, Ohio averages 74.4 ppg and gives up 69.4 ppg on defense. They shoot slightly better than their opponents at 42.5% vs 41.7% and average 7.4 3 pointers a game. They shoot 35.8% from the 3 and 72% from the free throw line. The team assist-to-turnover ration is approximately 1.2.
