The Pittsburgh Panthers finished the season 24-8 and 13-5 in Big East play and earned a #3 seed in the 2010 NCAA tournament. The Panthers notched big wins over Syracuse, West Virginia, and Villanova this season, but lost to Indiana, Seton Hall and USF. Pitt made it to the Elite Eight in the 2009 NCAA Tournament where they lost to Villanova. Head Coach Jamie Dixon is 9-6 lifetime in the NCAA Tourney and is 9-6 overall in Tourney appearances.
The Panthers are led this year in scoring by guard, Ashton Gibbs who averages 15.8 ppg and 1.9 apg. Other starters scoring in double figures include senior guard Jermaine Dixon at 10.7 ppg and 2.3 apg and junior guard, Brad Wanamaker at 12.1 ppg and 4.7 apg. Gibbs is the best outside shooter on the team and freshman guard, Trevor Woodall comes off the bench to play the point and averages 3.2 apg.
Unlike past years, Pitt does not have a dominating front court this year. As a result, they rely on their guard play to create turnovers and to produce the majority of the team’s scoring. They are vulnerable to a team that has strong guard play to go with a decent front court.
On the season, Pitt averages 68.8 ppg on offense and gives up 61.7 ppg on defense. They shoot 45 % from the field and opponents average 40%. Pitt knocks down a 5.5 average of 3′s a game and hits them at a 35% clip. The Panthers have a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio as a team and shoot free throws at a respectable 69% clip.
