They are a #16 seed in the NCAA west region and will take on #1 seed Syracuse in the first round. The Catamounts had big wins on the road at Boston U and Buffalo and at home against Fairfield. They did manage to lost at Binghampton and at home to Deleware this season. The school’s last NCAA tournament appearance was in 2005 in a second round loss to Michigan State. This will be coach Mike Lonergen’s first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Senior forward, Marqus Blakely leads the team in scoring with 17.4 ppg, 9.4 rpg, and 3.7 apg. Fellow senior, Maurice Joseph scores 14.1 ppg. The third leading scorer on the team is junior forward, Evan Field at 10.6 ppg. Blakely is a bit undersized at 6’5” for the amount of inside play he has done this season, but he has played a major role in Vermont’s success this season.
As a team, their shooting averages are ok for the season, but Vermont has been hit by hot and cold streaks throughout the year. In order to stay in the ball game, they will need to take car of the ball and shoot above the team field goal average of 43.8% in the game.
Vermont scores 70.2 ppg and gives up 64.2 ppg while holding opponents to 39.7% shooting. They also average 4.6 made 3′s a game and shoot 69 % from the free throw line. Their assist-to-turnover ration is a bit upside down at .9 though.
