The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament is the premiere collegiate postseason basketball tournament held every March and April in the United States. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) runs the tournament and it has been held every year since 1939. Every Division I conference receives one automatic bid to the tournament with the left-over spots being chosen by the NCAA selection committee. Factors that play in the selection of “at-large” teams to the tournament are overall record, team ranking, strength of schedule, and RPI rankings. Starting in 2001, a “play-in” game was added to the tournament that pits two of the lowest ranking conference champions against each other.
NCAA Basketball Tournament Championships
The UCLA Bruins hold the most NCAA championships with 11, the Kentucky Wildcats have 7, and the Indiana Hoosiers and North Carolina Tar Heels each have 5. The Duke Blue Devils and Kansas Jayhawks each have 3 NCAA Basketball Tournament victories a piece.
