2009 UNLV Runnin Rebels Recruits

#1 UNLV RecruitSG Anthony Marshall

Ht: 6’3”

Wt: 195lbs

ESPN Ranking: #85

Most scouts categorized Marshall as one of the toughest guards in the country with a high basketball IQ. Although not overly explosive, Marshall has a good array of moves that allows him to attack and slash to the basket. His defensive skills are what makes this young man such a good fit for Coach Kruger’s system. Although Marshall is considered as a shooting guard, he has excellent passing skills that could also make him a candidate for the point. He shows no fear as a rebounder and plays the game with a passion on both ends of the floor.

#2 UNLV RecruitCCarlos Lopez

Ht: 6’9”

Wt: 200lbs

ESPN Ranking: n/a

Lopez, although not physically overpowering, has shown an acceptable offensive game in close to the basket. He currently is more fit to play away from the basket until he adds additional strength and muscle. His medium range jumper is above average but he still needs to work on his consistency. His athleticism allows him to run the floor well in the transition game and has shown at times that he is capable of the 3 point shot. Lopez will need to bulk up to take advantage of his size and to develop more of an inside presence.

#3 UNLV RecruitCHenry Buckley

Ht: 6’10”

Wt: 200lbs

ESPN Ranking: n/a

Buckley for his size, although athletic, is incredibly thin. Most feel he will need to add both strength and muscle in order to compete effectively on the next level. His offensive skills are average but Buckley has shown some nice shots around the basket. He is a good shot blocker due to his long arms and can also rebound well at both ends of the floor. The verdict on this young man is that of a “project”.

#4 UNLV RecruitSGJustin Hawkins

Ht: 6’2”

Wt: 165lbs

ESPN Ranking: n/a

Although Hawkins will not wow you with highlight reel type plays, he will do the little things that help a team win. He has shown a great on court awareness both offensively and defensively. He can stretch defenses with his 3 point shooting or use his strength to post up a smaller opponent. He has a blue collar work attitude that will most likely get him floor time with the Rebels in the upcoming season.

Michigan State University Basketball Recruiting Class

It was almost a story book finish for Tom Izzo’s

2008 -2009 Michigan State Spartans. By most standards, it was an entertaining and unexpected run to the title game of the NCAA Tournament. It marked the 30th anniversary of the Magic Johnson led team that won it all. It was good drama and led to some of the highest viewing audiences of the tournament. Sadly, the Spartans saved their worst game for last and played nowhere near the level they had during the tournament run that saw them knock off two number 1 seeds, UConn and Loisville.

Sadly, the Spartans saved their worst game for last and played nowhere near the level they had during the tournament run that saw them knock off two number 1 seeds, UConn and Loisville.

But despite the loss, foes in the Big Ten Conference will have to face a team in 2009 -2010 that is returning most of its top players along with a fresh infusion of talent from Coach Izzo’s 2009 NCAA men’s basketball recruiting class. The results already have the Spartans wearing the preseason ranking of the number 1 team in the nation.

2009 Michigan State Spartans Recruits

#1 2009 Michigan State RecruitCDerrick Nix

Ht: 6’9”

Wt: 285lbs

ESPN Ranking: #97

Nothing can make a basketball coach smile more than to have a big physical presence in the middle and that is just what Nix will give Tom Izzo’s Spartans. Although he doesn’t have explosiveness that many would have liked to see, Nix relies on his physical strength and size. He uses his body effectively to literally wear down an opponent throughout the game. Offensively, Nix will need to continue to improve  on his footwork around the basket and develop more shots than just the dunk and the put-back. Nix will also need to reshape his body slightly to become even more of an imposing figure on the inside. Look for this young man to start contributing early on in the Spartans 2009-2010 basketball season.

#2 2009 Michigan State RecruitC- Garrick Sherman

Ht: 6’10”

Wt: 220lbs

ESPN Ranking: #99

Sherman has the ability to play either the high post or the low post and excel at either one. He is another big, strong body that fits right into Coach Izzo’s mold. Many consider him an old school post up player that has a wide variety of back to the basket moves. He has a big, wide frame, which most likely can carry even more muscle as he matures, and has shown he can dominate his area when needed. Sherman will never be mistaken for the smooth dancers that many low post players have tried to become, but what he lacks for in smoothness he makes up for in effectiveness. He has a good mid range jumper but needs to extend that slightly to open up even more lanes for his wing players. Look for this young man to get plenty of floor time in his freshman year.
