During the regular season, the Gators notched wins over Michigan State, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. They did have some bad losses, however, losing against South Alabama, South Carolina, and Georiga. Coach Billy Donovan is 22-7 in 9 total NCAA Tournament appearances, but has not been back to the Tourney since the Gators won the 2007 NCAA National Title.
Not a lot was expected out of the Gators this season with having a young backcourt in Eriving Walker and Kenny Boynton. Walker has performed above expectations averaging 12.6 ppg and 4.6 apg. Boynton has also exceeded expectations during his Freshman season leading the team at 13.6 ppg.
When the Gators have been bad this season, it has been due to poor shot selection combined with a lack of backcourt depth. Their frontcourt is led by Alex Tyus and Vernon Macklin with Tyrus scoring 12.0 ppg and grabbing 6.8 rpg. Macklin scores at a 10.4 ppg clip. There are no players who grab more than 7 boards per game.
The Gators score 71.5 ppg and give up 65 on defense. They shoot 44.3 % from the field and average 5.7 3 pointers a game while their opponents shoot 42.4 %. The Gators have just over a 1.1 assist to turnover ratio per game as a team.
Florida was a bubble team up until the end of the season, but was able to get enough work done to convince the NCAA selection committee to make them a 10 seed in the 2010 Tourney. Florida has a tough first round game against #7 seed BYU. If they can make it to the 2nd round, the likely opponent will be the #2 seed, Kansas State.
