 Gerald Henderson and Tyler Hansbrough
After a slow start to his collegiate career, Gerald Henderson came out of his shell last basketball season and became the Duke Blue Devils “Go-To” option. Unlike past seasons, Henderson was able to shed some of the timidity that had marked his career at Duke so far and pulled a 16.9 ppg average to go with 2.5 assists per game and a 3 point shooting percentage of 33.6%. Henderson has decent size at 6′5″ and 215 lbs and could be a small forward or shooting guard prospect for the right NBA team.
Gerald Henderson’s Collegiate Career at Duke
Gerald Henderson is that player that came in with a lot of promise in his freshman year who just took a bit to adjust to the college basketball game. During his first year at Duke, Henderson played in about half of the games and scored at a 6.2 ppg clip with 1.1 assists per game. As he saw more playing time in his sophomore season, Henderson started to blossom and scored at a 12.7 ppg average while pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game and 1.6 assists a contest. During his junior season, Gerald Henderson started to blossom and earned first team All-ACC honors and helped Duke obtain a 2 seed for the NCAA tournament. Henderson will be forgoing his senior season at Duke to declare for the 2009 NBA draft.
Gerald Henderson’s 2009 NBA Draft Prospects
Gerald Henderson brings outstanding athleticism to any NBA team that drafts him. He is a strong defender with NBA quickness. He’s an explosive leaper and considered to already have NBA strength to help sustain through the season. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Gerald Henderson, Sr who played 13 years in the NBA. On the downside, Henderson is not considered quite tall enough for the small forward position, and needs to improve his ball handling skills to be an effective two guard for an NBA team. His free throw ability is also not great for an NBA guard who slashes and scores points from the charity stripe. Gerald Henderson does have all of the tools a first round NBA prospect requires. Because of the lack of depth in big men in this year’s draft, Henderson could find himself picked as a late lottery pick to the end of the first round of the 2009 NBA draft.

 Jodi Meeks Drives Against Louisville
Last Updated: 24 June 2009.
Ok, so I didn’t quite get to updating my 2009 NBA Mock Draft until the day before draft day as I’m typing. We’ve seen who’s going and staying in the draft now. The biggest surprise is the lack of “awe” for Ricky Rubio’s only workout conducted before the draft with the Sacramento Kings. I dropped him all the way down to nr 5 since the Kings don’t seem to thrilled with him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him go even lower! Jodie Meeks chose to remain in the draft along with Memphis’s Shawn Taggart and we have seen a fair bit of movement of players based on how their pre-draft workouts have gone. Tyler Hansbrough and B.J. Mullens have helped their cases since the 2008-09 NCAA regular season wrapped up and Terrence Williams may have worked his way into a 2009 NBA lottery pick! Particularly interesting is that Minnesota has traded to get the nr 5 and 6 picks with many thinking they’ll take the best Point Guard on the board with the first pick and a good shooting or slashing guard with the second. Don’t be surprised to see them take DeRozan and Evans here vice mucking with Rubio if he’s still around.

 Duke Coach Basketball Mike Krzyzewski
Coach Mike Kryzewski’s 2008-09 Duke squad had an outstanding season last year going 30-7 against the #1 ranked schedule in the RPI, winning the 2009 ACC tournament, and making it to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16. Fans would have liked to see a Duke-UNC repeat in the Final Four, but the Blue Devils just couldn’t quite get over the hump against Villanova to get there.
Heading into the end of May, Duke has two great power forward prospects signed for next season in Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee. The Blue Devils still aren’t quite done recruiting, however, since with losing the John Wall PG lottery to Kentucky, they are heading into the 2009-10 season thing in the backcourt. With Gerald Henderson declaring for the NBA draft and Greg Paulus graduating, Duke has not been able to land one of the top-rated point or shooting guards in the 2009 NCAA recruiting class. Besides losing out on John Wall to Kentucky, Florida signed five-star guard Kenny Boynton and rival UNC signed Leslie McDonald. No doubt, Coach K will come up with a quality prospect or two for the backcout, but he just may have to look to JUCO land to do so.
