TBD 2010 Big East Tournament

Comments 3 Comments »

Predicted by many conference experts to be a top 5 team in the upcoming 2009-2010 season, Coach Boeheim now must rely on returning roster players and those of the 2009 men’s basketball recruiting class.

2009 Syracuse Orangemen Recruits

#1 Syracuse RecruitCDaShonte Riley

Ht: 6’11”

Wt: 220lbs

ESPN Rank: 58

Riley is a lean, athletic, long armed shot blocker that should develop in time to become a force in the middle for Coach Boeheim’s Orangemen. He has shown good ball handling ability from the high post along with a nice soft 15 ft. jumper to complement his ability to drive to the basket and score. Most scouts feel that Riley will need to add weight to his wiry frame in order to withstand the rigors of the rough and tumble Big East Conference schedule. As with many youngsters, Riley has shown at times to lose his focus and aggressiveness during games, but this will most likely cease to be a factor under Coach Boeheim’s’ watchful eye.

#2 Syracuse RecruitSGBrandon Triche

Ht: 6’3”

Wt: 210lbs

ESPN Rank: n/a

Triche is a highly skilled perimeter player with excellent accuracy out to 20ft. His strengths seem to lie in his ability to catch and score or spot up for the pass from inside. In order to be a contributor in the Orangemen’s offensive scheme, he is going to need to improve his ability to drive and attack the basket with authority. Considered an average defender, he will need to work on foot speed to guard the slashers of opposing teams. He has shown a good level of intensity and the mental toughness that will make him fit right in at Syracuse.

#3 Syracuse RecruitSF James Southerland

Ht: 6’7”

Wt: 190lbs

ESPN Rank: n/a

With a silky smooth shooting stroke, Southerland has excellent range with his jump shot that extends to the 3-point line and beyond. His length, athleticism and leaping ability gives him a major advantage in the mid range game but he needs to improve his in close offensive skills and ball handling ability. Defensively he shows outstanding quickness and should develop into a solid shot blocker with more work. He needs to add more muscle to his long and lean frame in order to compete with the more rugged forwards of the Big East conference.

Syracuse Basketball

Syracuse Basketball

Once again a solid season from Coach Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse  Orangemen. Finishing with an overall record of 28-10, Syracuse advanced to the NCAA South semifinals before bowing out to the Oklahoma Sooners. But what is troubling to the Syracuse fanbase is that during the offseason Coach Boeheim faces the likelihood of loosing 3 of his 5 starters to the upcoming NBA draft. Most notably will be the team’s top scorer and point guard Johnny Flynn.
