TheVillanova Wildcats finished the college basketball season 24-7 and 13-5 in Big East Play. The Wildcats are a #2 seed in the South Region in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats had big wins this season against Maryland, Georgetown, and on the road at West Virginia. Villanova lost to UCONN, Marquette, and Pitt. Coach Jay Wright is 11-7 in 7 overall NCAA Tournament appearances and led the Wildcats to the 2009 NCAA Tournament Final Four.

Villanova made it to the Final Four last year on the strength of their backcourt and are just as strong this season. Nova is led by star guard Scottie Reynolds who bypassed the NBA for one more season of college basketball. Reynolds averages 18.5 ppg and 3.3 apg. Corey Fisher is the second leading scorer at 13.7 ppg and 4.0 apg. Antonion Pena also scores 10.7ppg and grabs 7.4 rpg. Freshmen Dominic Cheek (5.1 ppg) and Maallik Wayns (6.8 ppg) come in to play in the backcourt as key reserves and will be full-time players as they move along in their basketball careers at Nova.

Nova ended the 2009-10 season dropping several games, but were still assigned a #2 seed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. They can problems in the paint when Antonio Pena is not on the floor.

Villanova scores 82.8 ppg (3rd in the nation) and give up 72.6 ppg. The Wildcats shoot 46.3 % from the field and make 7.7 3′s per game shooting 37.2 % from beyond the arc. They are also an excellent free throw shooting team making 75 percent from the charity stripe. The Wildcats have just over a 1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio as a team.

With the signing of Number 1 High School basketball prospect, John Wall, Coach John Calipari has launched the Kentucky Wildcats to the forefront of both the 2009 NCAA basketball recruiting classes as well as a likely number one pre-season NCAA basketball ranking for the 2009-10 season. The signing of John Wall also put the 2009 Kentucky recruiting class in the running for the best NCAA college recruiting class of all time. We’ll have to wait for the 2009-10 NCAA basketball season to get started this fall to tell if the 2009-10 Kentucky Wildcats come close to matching Rick Pitino’s 1996 NCAA champhionship squad who put 9 players in the NBA, but it will be interesting to see if Coach Cal can get the Wildcats’ team chemistry to click to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament next season!

#1 2009 NCAA Basketball Recruiting Class – Kentucky Wildcats

In two months, Coach Cal has catapulted the expectations for the Kentucky Wildcats from a “one to two year” project to content for the NCAA title, to some fans wondering if the Wildcats will lose a game next season. With the signings of John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in the past two months, Kentucky could potentially have three to four 2010 NBA Draft Lottery contenders next summer if shooting guard Jodi Meeks returns for next season. The Cats potential lottery picks would be: John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson, and Jodi Meeks. Don’t overlook the signings of point guard Eric Bledsoe, shooting guard Jon Hood, and JUCO talent Darnell Dodson either! Kentucky could very well field two five man teams that can compete with any other major college program next season!

The ‘other’ Wildcats had the best recruiting class for 2009 lined up until Coach Cal migrated north to Lexington. They have signed two of the best power forward prospects in the 2009 NCAA recruiting class with Mouphtaou Yarou and Isaiah Armwood to go with Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns. Nova should be giving the Louisville Cardinals a run for their money in their defense of the Big East regular season and post season tournament titles in the 2009-10 season.
