The Wildcats are a #2 seed in the South Region in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats had big wins this season against Maryland, Georgetown, and on the road at West Virginia. Villanova lost to UCONN, Marquette, and Pitt. Coach Jay Wright is 11-7 in 7 overall NCAA Tournament appearances and led the Wildcats to the 2009 NCAA Tournament Final Four.
Villanova made it to the Final Four last year on the strength of their backcourt and are just as strong this season. Nova is led by star guard Scottie Reynolds who bypassed the NBA for one more season of college basketball. Reynolds averages 18.5 ppg and 3.3 apg. Corey Fisher is the second leading scorer at 13.7 ppg and 4.0 apg. Antonion Pena also scores 10.7ppg and grabs 7.4 rpg. Freshmen Dominic Cheek (5.1 ppg) and Maallik Wayns (6.8 ppg) come in to play in the backcourt as key reserves and will be full-time players as they move along in their basketball careers at Nova.
Nova ended the 2009-10 season dropping several games, but were still assigned a #2 seed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. They can problems in the paint when Antonio Pena is not on the floor.
Villanova scores 82.8 ppg (3rd in the nation) and give up 72.6 ppg. The Wildcats shoot 46.3 % from the field and make 7.7 3′s per game shooting 37.2 % from beyond the arc. They are also an excellent free throw shooting team making 75 percent from the charity stripe. The Wildcats have just over a 1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio as a team.
